At 3181 meters (10436 feet), it is the ninth tallest peak in the Dolomites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, you will circulate three peaks of this mountain group: Punta Grohmann, Sassopiatto, and Sassolungo. Although there is quite a bit of elevation gain on this trail, it happens throughout almost 17 kilometres, so the incline and decline of the paths are never too big. The days during my visit were still pleasantly warm, but the evenings and nights were bitterly cold, with temperatures often falling below zero Celsius.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The great thing about hiking it in October is that there is very little human traffic, giving me the place all to myself. The roads are pretty windy, so take your time. You will drive towards the impressive Sella group with 90-degree walls stretching ahead of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>From Fassa Valley<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The nearest village to Passo Sella in the Fassa Valley is Canazei. The distance from Canazei by car is 13 km, and it takes approximately 20 minutes along the SS242, a route connecting the two valleys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you get near the Sella mountain pass, you will see a few roadside pull-outs from where you can admire Marmolada &#8211; Dolomite\u2019s highest peak!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to park your car<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>There are two parking lots near the Sassolungo circuit trailhead. The first one is on the opposite side of the road from the Hotel Passo Sella. Be careful when crossing the road! The second one is near the bottom station of the Sassolungo gondola. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bring cash to pay for your parking tickets! It usually costs a few euros to park for a full day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Getting to the trailhead by bus<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer season, bus no. 471 operates at 15-minute intervals between Canazei in Val di Fassa and villages in Val Gardena.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedtirolmobil.info\/en\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.suedtirolmobil.info\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sued Tirol Mobil<\/a>&#8216;s website for connections and prices. The end bus stop for this hike is <em>Schutzhaus Sellajoch<\/em>.&nbsp;Depending on your village, the bus journey takes anywhere between 35 minutes to an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternative approach via cable car from Campitello di Fassa<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the quickest ways to reach the Sassolungo circuit hike is by taking the Col Rodella cable car from Campitello village in Val Di Fassa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer season, the cable car operates between 8:30 AM and 5:30 PM from the first week of June until the first or second week of October. A clear sign is placed behind the Hotel Passo Sella, where the trailhead is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first kilometre, the path goes uphill until you reach Rifugio Fredrich August. From here to Rifugio Sasso Piatto, you will follow an undulating route that will never get too strenuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Admire the views into Fassa Valley, and remember to look back now and again. I recommend paying attention to the Tabacco Map, which you hopefully brought with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nearest sign for path no. 527 from Rifugio Sasso Piatto points uphill. Unfortunately, this is the path I started following before realizing after a couple of hundred meters that we were on the wrong route. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the descent route for <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-oskar-schuster\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"663\">via Ferrata Oskar Schuster<\/a>, which I did only a couple of years prior. Refer to my map to see my mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#48bda336\"><strong>TIP: <\/strong>Route 527 is a loop that splits at Rifugio Sasso Piatto, so following it in the right direction is essential. This stage involves a lot of uphill hiking, but it never gets too steep. That&#8217;s the beauty of the Sassolungo circuit hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At some point, path no. 526 splits into two: 526 and 526A. They run parallel to one another. Follow path no if you want slightly less elevation gain and loss. 526A. They both meet again at Rifugio E.Comici.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you pass Rifugio E.Comici, the beautiful views of the Sella group will stay with you until the end of the hike. This route took me 5 hours to hike, excluding the breaks. Here, you can catch the Sassolungo gondola and return to Passo Sella.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bear in mind this shortcut only makes sense and is possible between mid-June and the first week of October when the
