They say perfection doesn\u2019t exist, but when it comes down to hiking in the Dolomites, there is no better time for it than October\u2014at least in my humble opinion. You will then go South to Fiera di Primiero in the Pale di San Martino range before heading northwest to Val Gardena and ending in Santa Magdalena in Val Di Funes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the best airports to fly into? <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can fly to Innsbruck, Austria, or one of the airports near Venice (Marco Polo or Treviso). The distance from Innsbruck is 137 km, and it takes 2 hours to drive from Innsbruck airport to Dobbiaco. If you are flying to Venice, the journey by car to Dobbiaco will take approximately 2.5 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_is_the_perfect_time_to_follow_this_Dolomiti_autumn_itinerary\"><\/span><strong>When is the perfect time to follow this Dolomiti autumn itinerary?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Between October 20<sup>th<\/sup> and October 31<sup>st<\/sup><\/strong>. October is a relatively dry month. The summer storms are long gone, and the winds calm down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October, the nights get frigid cold as soon as the sun sets, with temperatures dropping below zero Celsius. Snow starts to appear at higher elevations, but I have never needed hiking spikes in October. Go big or go home, right? D\u00fcrrenstein is one of the busiest hikes during the summer, but once autumn hits, its slopes become deserted. When I hiked it for the first time in October last year, I only met a handful of locals on the trail and had the summit all to myself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why is the D\u00fcrrenstein summit hike great in autumn?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Durrenstein-22-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9223\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Durrenstein-22-1024x681.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Durrenstein-22-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Durrenstein-22-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Durrenstein-22.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mainly for two reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, it is sun-exposed, which can be problematic in the summer. I wouldn\u2019t say I like hiking in the scorching heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, during autumn, the cold breeze mixed with sunshine is the perfect combination, making this hike very enjoyable. Thanks to sun exposure, the trail is also not prone to icing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second and more important reason is the views! You can look down into the larch-filled valley for almost the entirety of the hike. There are some fantastic viewpoints along the way. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your legs are done for the day, go to the jetty, sit down, and enjoy the views! With some luck, you will see Seekofel \u2013 the mountain at which foot lies Lago di Braies, reflecting in the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lake Braies is a tourist hot spot, and quite frankly, I am not a big fan of this place, but I understand it attracts hundreds of tourists per day for a reason. Access to the lake is effortless. That&#8217;s Lago di Landro. Blink and you will miss it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lago di Landro offers great reflections of Monte Cristallo, home to two famous via ferratas: <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-marino-bianchi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"669\">Marino Bianchi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-ivano-dibona\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"634\">Ivano Dibona<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the lake&#8217;s water level might be very low in October, its turquoise colour remains, and it contrasts beautifully against the larch trees growing along the slopes of the surrounding mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lago Antorno<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Lago-Antorno-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11360\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Lago-Antorno-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Lago-Antorno-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Lago-Antorno-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Lago-Antorno-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another famous alpine lake in the Dolomites and a great autumn photography spot. Lake Antorno offers reflections of the southern side of the Tre Cime peaks. They look nothing alike in comparison to the famous northern view. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a beloved photo spot for many photography tours, so you might have to scramble a bit to compose a good photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cadini Di Misurina viewpoint<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Cadini-Di-Misurina-viewpoint-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11361\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Cadini-Di-Misurina-viewpoint-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Cadini-Di-Misurina-viewpoint-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Cadini-Di-Misurina-viewpoint-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Cadini-Di-Misurina-viewpoint-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If I had a dollar every time I was asked about this viewpoint, I would be rich (or at least, I could buy myself dinner).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This one is number one if it comes down to Instagram-able spots in the Dolomites. Now, before you get too excited, I have to tell you that to get to this spot, you will have to hike again, and after two intense hiking days, you might want to stick to roadside viewpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">reach the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/guide-to-tre-cime-nature-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tre Cime Nature Park,<\/a>\u00a0you must start the hike at Rifugio Auronzo and follow signs for Rifugio Fonda Savio along path no. 117. It also isn&#8217;t cheap. At ca. 30 Euros\/car, it&#8217;s one of the most expensive stretches of road you will ever drive on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drive is beautiful, though, particularly in October. About 14 kilometres into the drive, you will be on the Tre Croci mountain pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you will find the trailhead for the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/lago-di-sorapiss-day-hike\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"653\">hike to Lake Sorapiss<\/a>. When people ask me about the absolute-<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/best-autumn-day-hikes-italian-dolomites\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11664\">must-do fall hikes in the Dolomites<\/a>, the Croda Da Lago circuit is always my first answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/croda-da-lago-circuit-day-hike\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"658\">The Croda Da Lago circuit<\/a> leads through a dense larch forest, eventually bringing you to the shoreline of Lago Federa. Thousands of larch trees grow along the lake&#8217;s shoreline, creating a beautiful atmosphere during autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a mountain refuge built right near the lake. Whilst most huts close for the season by the third week of September, rifugio Palmieri usually stays open till November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is your chance to experience the Dolomiti mountain hut culture and even stay overnight. The lake&#8217;s turquoise waters contrast beautifully against the yellow and orange trees growing along its shoreline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should stroll around the lake to reach the viewpoint of the town pictured above. I&#8217;ve marked it on the map. Next on the itinerary is the walk through Val Venegia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After hiking for the past two days, you will appreciate the easy grade of this trail. It goes gently through the valley, and despite minimal effort, you will still be rewarded with amazing views of the jagged peaks of the Pale di San Martino range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It only takes a few hours round trip with minimal elevation gain to complete <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/venegia-valley-hike\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11520\">the hike through Val Venegia<\/a>. Consider day 6 to be another rest day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bring some food with you and have a picnic near Rifugio Venegia. Due to the lower elevation, compared to other locations included in this itinerary, autumn comes here a little later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why it\u2019s good to leave it for last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you get to the Santa Magdalena village, first make sure to check out the view of St Giovanni Chapel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afterwards, you have a couple of options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Head onto the easy panorama trail through the village. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are still up for a hike, I highly recommend tackling the Adolf Munkel Trail.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#48bda336\"><strong>TIP: <\/strong>Santa Magdalena is also spelled Santa Maddalena.
