During my first visit, I hiked to Kattanakken. I was so mesmerized by the views along this trail that I studied maps and pictures of the area to find another one that matched them. Then I stumbled upon Klovane. It is located right at the edge of the Jostedalsbreen National Park and above the isthmus of the two parts of Oldenvatnet Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jostedalsbreen is Norway&#8217;s biggest glacier field and most visited National Park. I&#8217;ve said it many times before. Norwegians don&#8217;t know what zig-zags are. They climb mountains the shortest way possible, often just going straight up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To put things in perspective for you, in the first two kilometres of the hike, you gain 800 meters. That means 400 meters of elevation\/kilometre. That is steep!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rapid elevation gain isn&#8217;t the only challenge. There are plenty of roots, rocks, and mud to face along this trail. It took me an hour to clean my boots after hiking to Klovane. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_The_best_time_of_year_to_hike_Klovane\"><\/span>5. The later the season, the drier it gets. My photos taken along this trail at the end of July may make you think this kind of weather is the norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the contrary, my friend and I were lucky with the conditions and the views they brought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Norwegian fjords and mountains are graced with cloudy and rainy weather, and July also tends to be the rainiest month. The two summer seasons I spent in Norway only confirmed that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you plan a <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/oslo-to-oslo-road-trip-across-the-fjords\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">road trip across Norway<\/a>, consider August or the beginning of September. A few residential buildings are next to it. The lake&#8217;s beautiful turquoise colour comes from the glaciers of the Jostedalsbreen field, including the famous Briksdalsbreen glacier tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The distinct view of the triangle-shaped Mount Hogenibba, on the other side of Klovane, will accompany you throughout the hike. Follow the bring-out-what-you-brought-in policy, which includes used toilet paper and tissues! It&#8217;s never ok to discard them on the trail. I always bring a little trash bag with me, which I keep in the side pocket of my backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Oldevatn campground has toilets and showers, as well as a little store where you can buy ice cream at the end of the hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also recommend dipping your feet in the lake. There are a few access points at the campground. For the next 2 kilometres, you will be hiking on a steep forest path with roots sticking out of the ground and waiting for your brief lack of attention to make you tumble to the ground. The sound of the flowing stream will accompany you almost to the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three sections with chains secured to the rocks to help balance. I am unsure if I would bring my dog again on this hike. I had to lift him occasionally, which is difficult considering he weighs 25 kilos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you emerge from the forest, you will hike through muddy fields. The last 500 meters become pretty gentle, a lovely welcome after the forest battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s nice to tick off the summit, but the best views are just below the summit, looking towards the lake and the glaciers.
