Loen is a village in Vestland County, Norway. Even though I have tackled plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/advanced-via-ferratas-in-the-italian-dolomites\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advanced via ferratas in the Italian Dolomites<\/a> before, I meant what I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Via ferrata Loen is often described as having medium difficulty, but in my opinion, some sections were quite challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After spending two summer seasons adventuring in Norway, I realized that Norwegians have a MUCH higher risk tolerance than other nations. The paths are often steep and rocky, and the rainy weather contributes to the difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_During_what_months_is_Via_Ferrata_Loen_accessible\"><\/span>5. Via Ferrata Loen should not be climbed during wet conditions. Your grip on wet rocks will be non-existent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The iron path was set up on Mount Hoven&#8217;s south-facing wall, which exposes it to the sun. Winter conditions disappear here much quicker than they do on the northern slopes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extrapolating, the official season for accessing Via Ferrata Loen starts in May and lasts until October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Do_you_need_a_guide_to_climb_Via_Ferrata_Loen\"><\/span>6. It can be accessed without a guide (some rules apply), but this doesn&#8217;t mean it should. If you have never been on a via ferrata before, hiring a guide and joining an organized trip is an excellent idea. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loenskylift.no\/loenactive\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.loenskylift.no\/loenactive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Loen active <\/a>tour company offers daily excursions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Via Ferrata Loen certainly isn&#8217;t a route for beginners. As I wrote, I still found the Loen iron path challenging despite having over 50 via ferrata routes under my belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prices for guided tours start from 1695 NOK\/per person (Summer 2024). The money goes towards keeping the route in top shape, and safety standards in Norway are high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the busy primary season (mid-June &#8211; August), you can only start climbing after 2 PM, basically after the departure of all guided tours. You can see far into Lodalen, Lake Lovatnet, and the Innvikfjord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The absolute highlight, however, is the 120-meters-long Gj\u00f8lmunnebrua suspension bridge hanging almost 800 vertical meters above the fjord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My friends and I were fortunate with the weather and photography conditions. We spent quite some time walking back and forth along the bridge and taking photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is another shorter (36-meter) suspension bridge a bit higher up, which I found terrifying to walk on because it consisted of three steel cables that I had to balance. Don&#8217;t put on your via ferrata equipment just yet; instead, carry it in your backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can walk to the start of the cable section from the parking lot near the Loen active shop or the parking lot near the bottom of the gondola station (in the upper car park). I linked to both of them in the Stats section above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once at the parking lot near the gondola station, a sign points toward Via Ferrata Loen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Climbing along the Via Ferrata Loen<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The first 30 minutes and approximately 250 meters of elevation gain consist of hiking. Then, you will have a 15-minute climbing section for which you should gear up and another 15 minutes of hiking. You can consider it a great warm-up. About one hour in, the serious scrambling begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please pay attention to the route and study it before you leave. There are a few variations of Via Ferrata Loen. I opted for the easiest one possible, but I still found it to be enough of a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The suspension bridge is around 3\/4 of the way up to the skylift station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"836\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Via-ferrata-Loen-Map-836x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15934\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Via-ferrata-Loen-Map-836x1024.jpg 836w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Via-ferrata-Loen-Map-245x300.jpg 245w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Via-ferrata-Loen-Map-768x941.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Via-ferrata-Loen-Map-1254x1536.jpg 1254w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Via-ferrata-Loen-Map-scaled.jpg 980w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 836px) 100vw, 836px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting down from the summit of Mt Hoven <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you make it to the top of the Loen Skylift gondola station, you have two options to get back down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hiking down to Loen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taking the gondola down<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we reached the top just in time for sunset, our only options were to take the gondola down or hike in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gondola operates until 10:30 PM, which gives you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery at the top. The one-way ticket isn&#8217;t cheap; it costs 360 NOK per person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you hike down, follow the gravel road for 6 kilometres to the parking lot in Oppheim. From there, it&#8217;s another 6 kilometres back to Loen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"12_How_to_dress_for_a_via_ferrata\"><\/span>12. <strong>How to dress for a vi<strong><strong>a ferrata<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important rule is to wear clothes that don&#8217;t constrict your movements and protect you from getting scratched on rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wore my La Sportiva climbing trousers, which I got a few years ago specifically for climbing along via ferratas. I always have two Merino wool T-shirts, one I wear and the other for changing at the top. Icebreaker is my favourite brand when buying Merino wool socks and T-shirts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend the Salewa Wildfire Edge approach shoes. They have great grip and are comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my backpack, I always have at least one warm layer (usually a down vest or down jacket) and one Gortex jacket to protect me from wind and rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_stay_nearby\"><\/span><strong>Where to stay nearby&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I have visited the area twice when travelling around Norway in a campervan. The first time, I stayed at the<strong> Tjugen camping <\/strong>near Lake Lovatnet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second time, I was docked at the <strong>Oldevatn camping<\/strong> near Lake Oldevatnet, which offers great access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/klovane-day-hike\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Klovane hike<\/a>. I can wholeheartedly recommend both campsites. They have great facilities and access to nearby attractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are travelling in a regular car and looking for a hotel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/no\/alexandra-loen.en.html?aid=1188554&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/no\/alexandra-loen.en.html?aid=1188554&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Hotel Alexandra<\/a>, right in the centre of Loen, is a great choice. The whole hike takes 1.5-2 hours to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lovatnet<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Another beautiful lake in the Stryn municipality of Vestland county in Norway, Lovatnet, has a fascinating and equally terrifying <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lovatnet\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lovatnet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">history of megatsunamis<\/a>. It is located in the parallel valley to Oldedalen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mount Sk\u00e5la <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Norway&#8217;s highest mountain peak rises straight from the Fjord. With 1848 meters of elevation gain, you must be committed to hiking up Mount Sk\u00e5la.
