I&#8217;ve spent a lot of time\u00a0exploring\u00a0Cortina and its surroundings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The high street boasts high-end fashion stores and fancy restaurants, so if you want to intersperse your mountain holiday with some shopping, Cortina is the place to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The popularity of Cortina is justified. It&#8217;s not difficult and offers an excellent opportunity to see these five monoliths from all angles while exploring World War I bunkers and trenches.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lago Sorapiss<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the classic hike around Cortina. The\u00a0route to <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/lake-sorapiss-trail-guide\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"653\">Lago Sorapiss<\/a>\u00a0includes forests, cliffs, cables, stairs, and one\u00a0colossal mountain reflection at the end. As mentioned, it&#8217;s a busy hike, but continually refreshing with its diverse sections.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12500252799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Via_Ferratas_Around_Cortina_DAmpezzo\"><\/span>Via Ferratas Around Cortina D&#8217;Ampezzo<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/748.jpg\" alt=\"Via Ferrata Vandelli on the Giro Del Sorapiss in the Italian Dolomites\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Via Ferrata Vandelli on the Giro Del Sorapiss<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ivano Dibona<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably the most famous via ferrata in the entire Dolomites,\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-ivano-dibona\/\" target=\"_blank\">the via fer<\/a>rata Ivano Dibona rose to popularity after featuring in the movie Cliffhanger,<\/span> starring Sylvester Stallone. Since 2016, the gondola at the start of the route has been closed, resulting in a significant reduction in traffic. Nowadays, this route gets hardly any footfall, giving it, at least in my eyes, even more appeal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sorapiss<\/strong> Circuit<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re up for a challenging few days in the mountains, the <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-giro-del-sorapiss\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"668\">Giro Del Sorapiss<\/a> combines three via ferratas that circumnavigate Mount Sorapiss. It&#8217;s not for the faint of heart and involves roughly 12 to 16 hours of hiking and climbing, including the approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Monte Averau&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first read about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-averau\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"666\">via ferrata Monte Averau<\/a>,\u00a0I thought a short climb couldn&#8217;t be unique. I couldn&#8217;t have been more wrong. The main reason, though, is the view. Sitting on the terrace, sipping a beer, watching the tumultuous afternoon clouds build up over Croda Da Lago or watching climbers go up and down\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-ra-bujela\/\">Ra Bujela<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-ra-bujela\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u00a0is a real treat.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rifugio Lagazuoi<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This private hut (pictured above) is accessible by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/lagazuoi-tunnels-day-hike\/\">the Lagazuoi Tunnels<\/a>,\u00a0a feast of adventure and WW1 history. It&#8217;s also accessible by\u00a0cable car, but the cuisine is what sets this hut apart. It&#8217;s some of the best hut food I&#8217;ve ever had. The view isn&#8217;t wrong, either \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rifugio Nuvolau<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the oldest\u00a0refuges\u00a0in the Dolomites, this precariously placed hut is a grand feat of engineering. Corvara in Badia<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/750.jpg\" alt=\"Corvara and Sassongher viewed from the Compologno Pass in the Italian Dolomites\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Corvara and Sassongher viewed from the Compologno Pass<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Corvara is kind of like Cortina\u2019s little sister.&nbsp;Both are only about 20km apart as the crow flies (36km driving). The pass separating them is Passo Falzarego, one of the most scenic passes in the Dolomites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Corvara has another famous pass \u2013 Passo Gardena,&nbsp;where you can find several&nbsp;great via ferratas.&nbsp;This is also one of the passes where <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/alta-via-two-guide-part-one\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"618\">Alta Via 2 runs, a two-week-long traverse across the Dolomites.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town is\u00a0significantly quieter than Cortina and has a more local feel. It&#8217;s short, impossible to get lost in, and very rewarding. The views of the ant-sized cars down on Passo Gardena make you appreciate how quickly you gain elevation on this route.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brigata Tridentina<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Tougher than Gran Cir,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-brigata-tridentina\/\">Brigata Tridentina<\/a>\u00a0has a\u00a0Smith\/Fletcher rating of 3B. It&#8217;s a 4-5 hour return, but could be broken up by an overnight stay in Rifugio Pisciadu or extended by climbing to the summit of Mount Pisciadu.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sentiero Attrezzato Sassongher<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you scroll back up to the panoramic shot of Corvara, you will notice that the town lies directly at the foot of a beautiful peak. Sesto and San Candido<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/752.jpg\" alt=\"The start of the Fiscalina Valley Hike near Sesto in the Italian Dolomites\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The start of the Croda Fiscalina Circuit Hike<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These two towns, separated by a 5-minute drive, are located in the northern region of the Dolomites.&nbsp;Their allure is mainly due to the proximity to the north border of the Tre Cime Nature Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, the towns themselves have no defining features over other small towns in the Dolomites, apart from providing a break from the comparatively chaotic Cortina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t worth staying in. On the contrary!&nbsp;They offer a quieter, more idyllic setting to appreciate the splendour of the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12500398099\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outdoor_activities_near_Sesto_and_San_Candido\"><\/span>Outdoor activities near Sesto and San Candido<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/753.jpg\" alt=\"The view along the Via Ferrata Strada Degli Alpini with Croda Dei Toni in the background\" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Via Ferrata Strada Degli Alpini<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Val Fiscalina<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The closest you can drive to the northern tip of the Tre Cime Nature Park is down Val Fiscalina. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This valley serves as the gateway to the via ferrata Strada Degli Alpini, mentioned below, and <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/croda-fiscalina-circuit\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"615\">the Croda Fiscalina circuit<\/a>, which leads to mountain huts, including Rifugio Zsigmondy-Comici, Pian di Cengia, and Rifugio Carducci.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Via Ferrata Strada Degli Alpini<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A great beginner via ferrata that starts in Val Fiscalina is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-strada-degli-alpini\/\">Strada Degli Alpini<\/a>. It&#8217;s a technically simple but very long ferrata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend splitting it up over two days to maximise your time at a higher elevation and simultaneously experience the mountain hut culture of Italy by staying in either Rifugio Zsigmondy\u2014Comici or Pian di Cengia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Croda Rossa Summit<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The route to Croda Rossa has been on my list for a very long time, and I finally managed to tick it off during a <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/monte-popera-circuit-in-sextener-dolomites\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22662\">4-day hut-to-hut hike across the Sextener Dolomites<\/a>. It&#8217;s best accessed from the top of the Croda Rossa gondola. <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-croda-rossa-and-zandonella\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"28189\">Via Ferrata Croda Rossa<\/a> can be combined with Via Ferrata Zandonella, making for an excellent full-day mountain outing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lago di Braies<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to check out the Instagram-famous Lago di Braies, Sesto or San Candido are great places to stay.\u00a0I am not a huge fan of busy areas. I usually head to the mountains to find solitude. Doesn&#8217;t that already say something?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love the stark contrast between hotel balconies covered in multicoloured pansies below monumentally large mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both towns are very close to Passo Pordoi, Passo Fedaia, and Passo Sella, where many hiking trails and ferratas start.\u00a0The passes provide access to Sassopiatto and Sassolungo, Piz Bo\u00e8 to the North, the entire Rosengarten group to the West, and Marmolada, the Queen of the Dolomites, to the Southeast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also big enough to have natural supermarkets with ample product choices and&nbsp;countless&nbsp;pizza parlours, gelaterias, and cafes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12500412299\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Outdoor_activities_around_Val_di_Fassa\"><\/span>Outdoor activities around Val di Fassa<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/761.jpg\" alt=\"via ferrata Sentiero Massimiliano in the Rosengarten Nature Park in the Italian Dolomites \" title=\"\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">via ferrata Sentiero Massimiliano in the Rosengarten Nature Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Passo Sella<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from being a driver&#8217;s paradise, Passo Sella is also great for hikers and climbers. Two excellent via ferratas start from the pass:\u00a0The advanced<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-poessnecker\/\">\u00a0via ferrata Mesules<\/a>\u00a0and intermediate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-oskar-schuster\/\">via ferrata Oskar Schuster.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I can also highly recommend hiking <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/sassolungo-circuit-day-hike-italian-dolomites\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11020\">the Sassolungo Circuit<\/a>. It starts at the pass and loops around Sassolungo and Sassopiatto peaks, visiting excellent backcountry huts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Passo Pordoi &amp; the summit of Piz Bo\u00e8<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Passo Pordoi connects Val di Fassa with Arabba, another famous ski town nearby. Directly at the pass, you can take advantage of the Sass Pordoi cable car, which will take you to an altitude of over 2900 meters. From here, it&#8217;s only a 1-1.5 hour <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/piz-boe-summit-hike\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"620\">hike to\u00a0the summit of Piz Bo\u00e8<\/a>. At 3152 meters, it&#8217;s the highest peak in the Sella group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Rosengarten&nbsp;Nature Park<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a soft spot in my heart for Rosengarten Nature Park. I spent a fantastic week adventuring there with my friends. There&#8217;s much to see and do there, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-passo-santner\/\">via ferrata Passo Santner<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/via-ferrata-sentiero-massimiliano\/\">Sentiero Massimiliano<\/a>\u00a0or the amazing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/vajolet-towers-day-hike\/\">hike to Vajolet towers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Marmolada and the Museum of the Great War<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not a big fan of museums, but this one is an exception. The Great War Museum is located at Punta Serauta, one of the summits of Marmolada, the highest mountain in the Dolomites. It has a very German feel. On one side of the valley, there\u2019s the St Ulrich Seisler Alm gondola, which whisks you up to\u00a0Alpi di Suisi, the high alpine meadow mentioned earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, the Ortisei\u2014Furnes -Seceda cable car transports you to the Puez-Odle Nature Park, where you can visit the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/guide-to-seceda-viewpoint\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"651\">Seceda viewpoint.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hike through Vallunga<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/vallunga-day-hike\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11919\">Vallunga<\/a> is an excellent option for those who have just begun their mountain adventure. It is a beginner hike through a picturesque, narrow U-shaped valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Passo Gardena&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I already mentioned Passo Gardena in my description of another town, Corvara.
