However, the lake can easily be reached via a day hike.

There are several ways to do it, but to avoid any confusion for this blog, I will include just two of them. The first and easiest is to catch the two-tier gondola from Alleghe: Alleghe—Pian di Pezze—Col Dei Baldi. In the summer season, the gondola operates between the end of June and the end of September.

From the top of the gondola station, you must follow the signs for Rifugio Coldai on path no. 561 and then 556. For most of the hike, you will have beautiful views of Mount Pelmo.

Once you reach the refuge, it’s another 10 minutes uphill to Forcella (saddle) Coldai, where you will first see the lake. The whole hike will take between 3 and 4 hours.

If you want to avoid the cost of the gondola and being tied to its schedule, you can park your car near Rifugio Palafavera, located close to the town of Mareson in Val di Zoldo, and from here, hike path 564, then turn onto 556. Again, follow the signs for Rifugio Coldai. This way is a bit longer (10 kilometres / 6 miles round trip and an additional 200 metres / 600 feet of elevation). This route will take around five hours.

READ MORE: Hiking Guide To Lake Coldai

TIP: For all adventure seekers, consider staying overnight at Rifugio Coldai and summiting Mount Civetta via the exhilarating via ferrata Degli Alleghesi.

Lake Coldai hike: the stats (from Col Dei Baldi gondola)

Distance roundtrip: 6.9 km / 4.3 mi

Time required: 3-4 h

Total ascent: 506 m / 1660 ft

When to go: June – September (October from Palafavera hut)

The nearest towns: Alleghe, Pescul, Selva Di Cadore, Mareson-Pecol

12. The hike can be completed in as little as three hours, but expect to spend a full day on it, taking in the views and shooting countless photos. The total elevation gain is 424 meters (1278 feet) spread across 11.8 kilometres (7.3 miles), so more often than not it feels like a walk rather than a hike.

With that said, there are a few sections in the first third of the hike where sure-footedness and dry weather conditions are essential. Those sections involve short traverses across a very rocky and steep terrain, with significant drop-offs to one side.

Since it is a one-way relocation hike, you will have to take a bus at the start.
