They can be tackled separately or together. This was the last via ferrata on my\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/rosengarten-traverse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiday traverse through the Rosengarten group,<\/a>\u00a0and because I wasn&#8217;t feeling well, I decided to sit this one out. The opening times and prices of the chairlift can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fassa.com\/en\/ski-lifts-slopes\/summer-lifts\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.fassa.com\/en\/ski-lifts-slopes\/summer-lifts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> (click on the Carezza tab). During summer, the lift operates from the end of May until mid-October<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By car<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes 40 minutes to drive from Bolzano, the nearest city, to the bottom of the chairlift. If you are staying in any town in Val Di Fassa, you can reach the parking lot within 10-20 minutes. A parking area is\u00a0at the bottom of the chairlift. It&#8217;s OK to leave your car there overnight as long as you are not camping in it<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By bus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The bus stop for the Paolina chairlift, where the Rosengarten Traverse starts, is aptly named Paolina. Bus numbers 180, 184, and N180 operate on this route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find the nearest bus stop to your accommodation by zooming in on it on Google Maps<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">. Then, type in your point of departure and destination on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.suedtirolmobil.info\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sued Tirol Mobil<\/a>\u00a0website. If you are travelling from Bolzano,<\/span> the journey takes approximately one hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_The_approach_from_Rifugio_Paolina_to_Rifugio_Roda_Di_Vael\"><\/span>4. This is\u00a0an\u00a0easy\u00a0walk with a gentle incline. You should reach Rifugio Roda Di Va\u00e8l within 40 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12218849499\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Via_ferratas_Masare_and_Roda_Di_Vael_route_description\"><\/span>5. Via ferratas Masare and Roda Di Vael: route description<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The climbing is straightforward and should pose no real problems, but the exposure can be significant at times. A head for heights will be useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the summit of Roda di Va\u00e8l can get busy, the rest of the route, including Via Ferrata Masar\u00e9,\u00a0was relatively\u00a0quiet.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 1: Rifugio Roda Di Vael to Unnamed Peak<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-9-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25436\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-9-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-9-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-9-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-9.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow the signs away from Rifugio Roda di Va\u00e8l (2283m) posted for Via Ferrata Masar\u00e8 and start heading uphill. Although there is a main path, desire\u00a0paths scar the scree slopes and grassy plateaus. If you are heading to the left of the ridge (looking from Rifugio Roda di Va\u00e8l), then any path will do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This part of the track gains elevation quickly and offers excellent views of the cliffs that you\u2019ll soon be traversing. Cable use is extensive and necessary. Exposure is sometimes significant, but good handholds, staples, and bars have been well-positioned to make the climbing relatively stress-free.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you get past a small hollowed-out cave filled with crucifixes and Mother Mary (trust me, I know how it sounds, welcome to Italy), you\u2019re passed halfway on the first of the two ferratas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon, you will start a short descent to the fork 20 minutes downhill from Forcella del Diavolo. All routes are well-signposted and easy to follow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The face traverse (pictured below) at the Forcella connecting the Cresta de Masar\u00e9 and Mount Roda da Va\u00e9l&nbsp;is not too demanding (if you\u2019re a full-grown adult).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of good handholds, ladders, and well-placed iron rods. However, if heights scare you, the closest ground below is a sheer drop tens of meters below you.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This small section of the route strictly prohibits passing. If someone has already started on the wall, do not attempt to pass them. Let them finish and then proceed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019re on the other side, you can sigh with relief and watch other keen adventurers tackle the wall.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, most of the route to the summit of Roda de Va\u00e8l (2806m) is switchbacks on an exposed, well-trodden scree face. The summit is a great place to stop for a snack.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stage 4: The descent<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-15-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25442\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-15-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-15-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-15-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Via-Ferrata-Masare-Roda-Di-Vael-15.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The descent starts on the opposite side of the Roda De Va\u00e8l summit. This part of the route is more of a protected walk for more experienced hikers. Due to its popularity amongst people of all ages and abilities&nbsp;and&nbsp;the proximity of the K\u00f6nig Laurin and Paulina chairlifts,&nbsp;cable protection is prevalent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Passo Vajolon, there is another 45-minute descent back to Roda di Va\u00e8l Hut (Path 551, then 541).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#24ad9936\"><strong>TIP: <\/strong>Alternatively, you can descend westward from Passo Vajolon on path no. 9 toward path no. 552 which leads southward to Paolina&nbsp;Hut (I marked this route in red on the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Where_to_stay_overnight\"><\/span>6. The hut offers 59 beds spread across multiple rooms. The refuge is usually open from the start of June until mid-October (opening times vary year to year and depend on snow).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Option 2: Stay in a town in Val Di Fassa<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Canazei, Vigo Di Fassa, Pozza di Fassa, Moena, or Campitello are just a few towns in the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/guide-to-fassa-valley-rosengarten-nature-park\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22954\">Fassa Valley<\/a> in the Italian Dolomites. They all lie within a few minute&#8217;s drive of one another and are great places to make a base for exploring the trails in the Dolomites. If you are tackling Via Ferratas Masar\u00e8 and Roda Di Va\u00e8l as a day excursion, you can return to your hotel on the same day. Its two arms and a hidden extra coil work as an energy absorption system in case of a fall. The two carabiners at the end of the lanyard clip into the cable. Make sure the carabiners are equipped with the palm squeeze mechanism.
