The Summary of the Milford Track<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>The Milford track has been touted as one of the most scenic walks in the entire world.<\/strong>&nbsp;One of the original phrases coined to describe it was, unbeknownst to most potential walkers, \u201cA Notable Walk\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the original title of an article published by The Spectator on September 12th, 1908. However, the editor John Stracey realised it wasn\u2019t exactly an eye-catching opening and changed it to the now-famous \u201cThe Finest Walk in the World\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Little did he know how much of an impact a 1700-word article sandwiched between the &#8216;Boys Brigade&#8217; on page 10 and &#8216;Letters to the Editor&#8217; on page 12 would have on the global travel community over a hundred years later.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, the bare bones of the track haven&#8217;t changed much, oversimplified the route still ambles along the Clinton River over the MacKinnon Pass and out toward Milford Sound.\u00a0<strong>What has changed however is the track&#8217;s popularity and the facilities provided along the way.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12048793799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Pricing_and_bookings_on_the_Milford_Track\"><\/span>1. The&nbsp;<strong>reservation system for the track opens mid to late June each year<\/strong>&nbsp;for the upcoming hiking season.&nbsp;<strong>Most bookings are taken within a few hours<\/strong>&nbsp;and within a week there\u2019ll be next to nothing left. Bookings and mandatory&nbsp;from the end of October to the end of April.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancellations are always a possibility. It\u2019s common for people not to stick to their original travel plans so by checking the DOC\u2019s Online Booking Portal everyday, you might get lucky, just as I did! I booked my spots on the Milford Track only 4 weeks ahead of the trek, this is rather unheard of!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hut prices have seen a recent increase and now cost 140$ per person for international visitors regardless of age.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For New Zealand residents the prices remains at&nbsp;70$ per person and it&#8217;s free of charge for youth under 18 years of age.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It is MANDATORY to stay at all 3 huts and the track can only be walked in one direction.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The huts include everything you\u2019ll need to ensure a comfortable stay.<\/strong>&nbsp;Flushing toilets, gas, hobs, tables, benches, heating, solar lighting, bunk beds and mattresses. Plus friendly DOC rangers that give informative talks in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12048794399\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_The_boat_transfers\"><\/span>2. TrackNet, and many other companies, offer a&nbsp;<strong>bus service from Te Anau to Te Anau Downs for 28$.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also offer a service from the&nbsp;<strong>Milford Sound Ferry Terminal back to Te Anau for 53$,&nbsp;<\/strong>once you complete the hike.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using these transfers,&nbsp;<strong>the total cost of the Milford Track for an international visitor is&nbsp;629$&nbsp;and for NZ residents over 18 is 419$.&nbsp;<\/strong>It&#8217;s certainly not cheap and since the recent&nbsp;price increase and the introduction of the two tiered pricing system I started questioning whether&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/are-new-zealand-great-walks-that-great\/\">New Zealand&#8217;s famous Great Walks are really that great<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering that weather is very inconsistent in Fiordland National Park and it&#8217;s the rainiest place in New Zealand, paying a few hundred bucks to walk for 4 days in rain (which is not uncommon) can be very frustrating!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Both the bus transfers and the boat transfers can be arranged whilst booking the huts on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bookings.doc.govt.nz\/Saturn\/Facilities\/SearchViewGW.aspx?placeId=466\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">DOC\u2019s Online Booking Portal.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12048795299\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_The_elevation_profile_of_the_Milford_Track\"><\/span>4. A tour guide from the DOC tells interesting stories about the initial formation of the Milford Track and of the Maori use of Lake Te Anau.&nbsp;<strong>The ride lasts between 1 hour and 90 minutes<\/strong>&nbsp;depending on water conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve arrived at the Glade Wharf Terminal, the track is&nbsp;<strong>through thick native beech forest<\/strong>&nbsp;but is easily wide enough for a small vehicle. It won\u2019t be long until you see the first sign of civilisation in the form of&nbsp;<strong>Glade House after around 20 minutes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Glade House is the first of 3&nbsp;backcountry lodges&nbsp;owned and operated by Ultimate Hikes that you\u2019ll come across on the Milford Track. Their prices start at $2,130 for a 6 bed dorm in low season and range to $3,330 for a single room in high season. Do not expect a bus to come though. Not after long you\u2019ll arrive at&nbsp;<strong>Mintaro Hut named after the nearby Mintaro Lake,<\/strong>&nbsp;the source of the Clinton River which has been on your right hand side the entire day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If the weather is good, drop your bag at the hut and head up MacKinnon Pass.&nbsp;<\/strong>You will be walking over it the next day but if&nbsp;the weather is cooperating this&nbsp;may be your only&nbsp;chance to see the pass in all it&#8217;s glory. Contrary to popular belief this is not the tracks highest point.&nbsp;<strong>Take in all the expansive views of Mount Balloon, Mount Hart and an amphitheatre of other peaks around&nbsp;you.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The elevation of MacKinnon Pass is debatable as it depends whether you accept the exact location of the pass to be the memorial at 1080m, the highest point of the Milford Track at 1154m or the MacKinnon Shelter at 1105m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several tarns adorn the pass and make for&nbsp;<strong>great photographic opportunities<\/strong>&nbsp;until you get too cold or tired with the usual winds that are funnelled into the area. To give you an idea of how strong they can be, in the past the winds have blown off the previous MacKinnon shelters right off their foundations! It\u2019s one of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/best-backcountry-huts-in-new-zealand\/\">the most photogenic mountain huts in New Zealand<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;and has gas, two hobs and seating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After the thrill of the pass the trail starts to head downhill.<\/strong>&nbsp;If the track is snowy, icy or flooded you may have to use the emergency track which is similar aesthetically to the normal track but a little steeper. An&nbsp;<strong>extension to the base of Sutherland Falls<\/strong>&nbsp;starts here and adds another hour to 90 minutes to the day.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Sutherland Falls is the largest waterfall in New Zealand.<\/strong>&nbsp;It cascades over 580m over 3 distinct drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Quintin Lodge, Ultimate Hikes very kindly permit use of their outhouses and also offer free tea, coffee and other drinks for the tired hikers! I may or may not have drank 3 cups of hot chocolate whilst resting before the last stretch for the day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Sound-20-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13819\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Sound-20-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Sound-20-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Sound-20-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Sound-20.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The calm waters of Lake Quill becoming Sutherland Falls seen from a scenic flight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve now completed all of the major elevation changes of the trail and can expect a mostly flat walk all the way to Sandfly Point, but first a cosy night at the Dumpling hut awaits you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From Quintin Lodge it\u2019s another 45 minutes-1 hour to Dumpling Hut<\/strong>, your third and final hut on the Milford Track and my personal favorite along this trail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12048805899\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_4_Dumpling_Hut_to_Milford_Sound\"><\/span>Day 4: Dumpling Hut to Milford Sound<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\" style=\"font-size:22px\">\n<li><strong>Distance between Dumpling Hut and Sandfly Point: 18 kilometres<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Elevation Gain\/Loss: Minimal&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Milford-Track-62-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13849\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Milford-Track-62-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Milford-Track-62-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Milford-Track-62-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Milford-Track-62.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst being the longest day on the trail,&nbsp;<strong>this 4th day isn\u2019t too difficult.<\/strong>&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;mostly flat along a wide well-maintained gravel path. The track now&nbsp;<strong>follows the true right of the Arthur River<\/strong>&nbsp;until you reach the boat shed where you\u2019ll cross&nbsp;<strong>another suspension bridge<\/strong>&nbsp;over to the true left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A short 1 minute extension is now available to see the Bell Rock<\/strong>, an interesting formation that you have to duck inside to fully appreciate.&nbsp;<strong>Mackay Falls, pictured above, are also worth your attention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your next significant viewpoints come in the form of&nbsp;<strong>Giants Gate waterfall.&nbsp;<\/strong>Right&nbsp;next to the falls&nbsp;is a sheltered area where you can have your lunch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Giant&#8217;s Gate waterfall, the\u00a0path joins Lake Ada. This part of the trail was constructed by a prison labor gang between 1890 and 1892. You can even spot where some convicts signed their hard work into the rocky cliff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Track-63-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13851\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Track-63-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Track-63-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Track-63-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Milford-Track-63.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In two years they managed to\u00a0build 3km of trail as the weather, mud, and sandflies were so atrocious,\u00a0it\u00a0hindered their work significantly. That&#8217;s only 4.1 metres a day! Plus I imagine the prisoners weren&#8217;t paid very well (or even at all) and weren&#8217;t too keen on straining themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Once you\u2019ll reach the shelter at Sandfly Point\u00a0resist the urge to put your backpack down and sit down. The finish to the Milford Track is another 50m away, so drop your bag, complete the trail, give yourself a high five, and then go back and wait for your boat transfer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The boat ride takes around 10 minutes<\/strong>&nbsp;and offers views into&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/2016\/12\/13\/milford-sound-the-8th-world-wonder-in-8-beautiful-photos-tips-for-visiting\/\">Milford Sound<\/a><\/strong>, one of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/2015\/08\/14\/18-most-photogenic-places-on-the-south-island-of-new-zealand\/\">the most photogenic places on the South Island!&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12097015899\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_The_Summary_of_the_Milford_Track\"><\/span>6. Altogether it\u2019s a 53.5km of pure bliss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes it unique is that\u00a0the track can only be walked in one direction.\u00a0Combined with the\u00a0heavily restricted spots in the huts,\u00a0this dramatically reduces the number<strong> of people you\u2019ll bump into<\/strong>\u00a0on the trail, making it feel quieter and more secluded. I wish this was enforced on more Great Walks such as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/kepler-track-hiking-guide\/\">the Kepler<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/routeburn-track-information\/\">the Routeburn track.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/routeburn-track-information\/\">&nbsp;<\/a><strong>The Milford Track is also the only Great Walk where camping is 100% prohibited.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If for whatever reason, you can\u2019t walk the Milford Track, consider hiking either Lake Marian\u00a0or Gertrude Saddle,<\/strong>\u00a0two of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/photography-spots-north-island-new-zealand\/\">the best day hikes on New Zealand\u2019s South\u00a0Island<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0and you\u2019ll still have a well-formed picture of how beautiful Fiordland National Park is!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you feel like there is something I haven&#8217;t covered and have more questions about backpacking the Milford Track leave them in the comments below.
