Tauranga Valley Lookout<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With a lighthouse around every corner, beaches rumoured to be up to 90 miles in length, large sand dunes and more backcountry huts than you can count,&nbsp;<strong>New Zealand\u2019s North Island should blow some wind into your photography sails.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The general consensus amongst most landscape photographers is that the South Island wins the beauty pageant. Personally, I see the North Island and the South Island as different entities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The North is more tropical, lush and green. It\u2019s home to long beaches and thick native bush. The south on the other hand is more mountainous and rocky.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like the rest of the world, the sun in New Zealand rises in the east and sets in the west.&nbsp;<strong>This means that all the photography locations on the east coast are generally better for sunrise and accordingly the spots on the west coast are better at sunset.<\/strong>&nbsp;We will get to&nbsp;&#8216;what is where&#8217; in a moment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042809999\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Cape_Reinga_Lighthouse\"><\/span>1. Waves overlap in a patchwork of rising and falling white froth. It&#8217;s also where the Te Werahi Track starts, one of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/day-hikes-north-island-new-zealand\/\">the&nbsp;best&nbsp;hikes&nbsp;on the North Island<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042810799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Pouakai_Tarns\"><\/span>2. The nearest city of any size is New Plymouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are&nbsp;<strong>several viewpoints of the mountain but the most popular is the Pouakai Tarns<\/strong>&nbsp;near the backcountry hut with the same name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>roughly a 2.5 hour hike<\/strong>&nbsp;to the tarns but seeing as the&nbsp;<strong>Pouakai Hut<\/strong>&nbsp;is one of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/best-backcountry-huts-in-new-zealand\/\">the best backcountry huts in New Zealand<\/a>&nbsp;then why not stay there and visit the tarn at sunrise?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are only&nbsp;<strong>15 minutes away from the hut.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;Be warned though, Taranaki is a very shy volcano and it often hides behind the clouds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042811199\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Te_Paki_Sand_Dunes\"><\/span>3. Keep an eye on your camera gear!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watching sand boarders racing down the slopes or finding interesting sand formations are my favourite activities there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A piece of advice,&nbsp;<strong>leave your shoes in your vehicle and go bare foot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042812599\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Castle_Point_Lighthouse\"><\/span>4. Castlepoint Lighthouse has several vantage points that showcase its surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the car park it\u2019s an easy&nbsp;<strong>10-minute stroll<\/strong>&nbsp;up to its base along a sand beach, then a concrete path, then a ridiculously photogenic boardwalk. The&nbsp;<strong>windy boardwalk leads the eye directly to the prominent lighthouse<\/strong>&nbsp;if you set up in the right spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042813799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_The_Emerald_Lakes_on_the_Tongariro_Crossing\"><\/span>5. Mount Eden<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Auckland-13-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12238\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Auckland-13-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Auckland-13-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Auckland-13-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Auckland-13.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chances are you\u2019ll be flying into Auckland<\/strong>&nbsp;if you\u2019re visiting the North Island on a road trip and although I think you should get out of the city as quickly as possible, I do understand that you may have to spend a night or two there recovering from jetlag or acclimatizing to the 100% humidity that Auckland often has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/2014\/11\/17\/auckland-s-viewpoints\/\">Auckland\u2019s photography spots<\/a>&nbsp;are generally dominated by the Sky Tower and the summit of Mount Eden is no different. Although it has closed to automobiles the little volcanic crator is still open to foot traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The summit is around a 30 minute walk from the nearest car park&nbsp;<\/strong>and a perfect spot to capture Auckland&#8217;s skyline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042815099\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Mount_Maunganui_Summit\"><\/span>7. Summits prove to be really photogenic here in New Zealand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Mount\u2019 as its referred to by locals is a<strong>&nbsp;45 minute hike<\/strong>&nbsp;along the eastern coast very close to the centre of Tauraunga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon summiting you understand why the beach front properties are worth a few million dollars each. The&nbsp;<strong>crescent shaped capes stretch as far as the eye can see<\/strong>&nbsp;and two small islands lie just off shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have&nbsp;hiked here for sunrise on my 29th birthday and have received the best present from mother nature: the spectacle of fog rolling through the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042815899\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_The_Three_Sisters_and_The_Elephant_Rock\"><\/span>8. However, it\u2019s still&nbsp;worth paying a visit to and so are the Three Sisters that lie close by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>hey rise out of the sea very much like the Basalt Sea Stacks in Reynisfar,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/iceland-travel-guide\/\">Iceland<\/a>&nbsp;and are a&nbsp;<strong>great spot to watch the sunset<\/strong>. You can get to them&nbsp;by driving for an hour&nbsp;<strong>north from New Plymouth<\/strong>&nbsp;and taking a short walk down to the beach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to be closer to the action then the town of Tongaporutu is the closest place to stay.&nbsp;<strong>M<\/strong><strong>ake sure you coincide your visit with low tide.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042816999\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Redwood_Forest_Rotorua\"><\/span>9. Redwood Forest Rotorua<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Redwood-Forest-Rotorua.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13319\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Redwood-Forest-Rotorua.jpeg 940w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Redwood-Forest-Rotorua-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Redwood-Forest-Rotorua-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rotorua is one of my favourite cities on the North Island.<\/strong>&nbsp;Its densely populated by M\u00e3oris, who have&nbsp;made sure that the land is now protected from commercial interests and environmental issues are dealt with precision and care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The protected Redwood Forest is a great example of this. Commercially it is worth a fortune but thankfully no amount of money can buy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are&nbsp;<strong>several pathways in and amongst the trees<\/strong>&nbsp;and it\u2019s at its&nbsp;<strong>most beautiful during golden hours<\/strong>&nbsp;(just before the sun sets and shortly after it rises)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042817799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Tapotupotu_Bay\"><\/span>10. It&#8217;s also home to the best campsite I have stayed at on the North Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheltered from civilisation and with a beach that could easily compete with some of the best beaches in the World! This place is features on my&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/2016\/10\/15\/4-week-ultimate-travel-itinerary-around-new-zealand\/\">four to eight week itinerary around New Zealand.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To get a great aerial view of the bay make sure to hike up the hill on the left side of the beach. It will only take half an hour!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042819299\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11_Cathedral_Cove\"><\/span>11. Cathedral Cove<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Cathedral-Cove-1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12190\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Cathedral-Cove-1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Cathedral-Cove-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Cathedral-Cove-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Cathedral-Cove-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With certainty, this is the most famous photography spot on the North Island, so to get your picture looking like the one above you will need to use some photoshop skills to crop out others.&nbsp;Cathedral cove is&nbsp;<strong>on the east coast in the Coromandel region<\/strong>&nbsp;only a&nbsp;couple of hours away from Auckland.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>closest town with any significant features is Hahei<\/strong>&nbsp;where a few hotels, a campground, a small shop and a couple restaurants can be found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From there it\u2019s a short 10 minute drive to the Cathedral Cove car park&nbsp;and another<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;30 \u2013 45 minute undulating walk to the beach<\/strong>&nbsp;along a wide paved path with intermittent section of boardwalk and wooden staircases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cave is certainly a sight in itself but there are several other rocky outcrops that make fantastic photographic opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you\u2019re going at sunset don\u2019t forget to take a head torch so you can get back safely.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042819799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"12_Whakatane\"><\/span>12. Whakat\u00e3ne<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Wkakatane-Sunset-1-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13322\" width=\"749\" height=\"1123\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Wkakatane-Sunset-1-1-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Wkakatane-Sunset-1-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Wkakatane-Sunset-1-1-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Wkakatane-Sunset-1-1-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Wkakatane-Sunset-1-1-scaled.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A small, free-spirited town, renowned for being \u2018The Gateway To White Island\u2019, Whakat\u00e3ne has a&nbsp;<strong>very picturesque statue of Wairaka&nbsp;<\/strong>and a beautiful coastline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wairaka, and all the other females of an exploring M\u00e3ori tribe, were aboard a canoe which was slowly being washed out to sea whilst the men were exploring on land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women were&nbsp;forbidden to touch the oars but seeing as Wairaka understandably didn\u2019t want to die at sea, she picked up an oar and started rowing back to shore shouting \u2018Kia Whakat\u00e3ne au i ahau\u2019 which means \u201cI will act the part of a man\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When other women joined in, they were quickly saved. In honour of her bravery and courage a statue has been erected and the town named Whakat\u00e3ne.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12042821899\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"13_Tauranga_Valley_Lookout\"><\/span>13. Tauranga Valley Lookout<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tauranga-Valley-Lookout.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13323\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tauranga-Valley-Lookout.jpeg 940w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tauranga-Valley-Lookout-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Tauranga-Valley-Lookout-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you get any ideas&nbsp;<strong>The Tauranga Valley Lookout is not near Tauranga.<\/strong>&nbsp;The Tauranga Valley is situated a short drive&nbsp;<strong>north of the Bay Of Islands.<\/strong>&nbsp;This road is very close to a&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/day-hikes-north-island-new-zealand\/\">great hike on New Zealand&#8217;s North Island<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;called St Paul&#8217;s Rock. In the distance you can just see Tauranga Bay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think this spots represents what North Island is all about &#8211;&nbsp; lush, rolling hills along the coasts reaching further then the eye can see.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Well there you have it. These are some of&nbsp;my favorite&nbsp;photography spots that the North Island of New Zealand has to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully my photos will inspire you to visit some or hopefully all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, this list is subjective and nowhere near exhausted.
