You can sometimes expect a little shack, or a full-blown 54-bed backcountry &#8216;villas&#8217; with flushing toilets, kitchens, mattresses, and evening entertainment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some are serviced and have full-time wardens, others are there to only provide a basic shelter after a long day of hiking, but&nbsp;<strong>they all have one thing in common &#8211; a million-dollar view!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12046787299\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Aspiring_Hut\"><\/span>1. The hut is owned by NZAC (New Zealand Alpine Club) but operated by the DOC (Department of Conservation). It\u2019s&nbsp;one of the fancier huts&nbsp;which boasts flushing toilets, a huge kitchen with gas hobs, big benches and tables, log burners, two separate bunk rooms, and a&nbsp;great location to explore the Matukituki Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s through the Aspiring Hut that you can reach Liverpool Hut and French Ridge Hut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most popular trails from the Aspiring Hut is the route up the Pylon and further to the Cascade Saddle.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/2015\/12\/07\/queenstown-s-must-dos-this-summer\/\">A great hike in Wanaka<\/a>&nbsp;if you want the best glacier view I&#8217;ve ever had in New Zealand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bunks: 33<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Price: $30NZD per person (discount for NZAC or any other international Alpine Club members)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bookings: First come, first served<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length: 9km one-way<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Duration: 2 hours one-way<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Elevation Gain: Minimal<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12046797799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Brewster_Hut\"><\/span>2. The route up to Brewster Hut can be treacherous in bad weather. It immediately&nbsp;<strong>starts with a crossing of the Haast River<\/strong>&nbsp;which can be anything from a trickle to a chest-deep, fast-flowing river.&nbsp;Do not attempt to cross, if it\u2019s not safe to do so,&nbsp;and check at the DOC office in Wanaka before heading out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theadventurejunkies.com\/how-to-cross-a-river-safely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learn how to safely cross a river here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve crossed the river, the route climbs steeply through the forest where you\u2019ll have to use tree roots to pull yourself up in several sections. Once above the tree line, the path undulates along a ridgeline with a waterfall-laden valley on each side. On a clear day,&nbsp;you get&nbsp;<strong>views of the Brewster Glacier.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you arrive at the Brewster Hut, you\u2019ll notice that the long drop toilet is in an incredibly precarious position overlooking the valley.&nbsp;<strong>A true loo with a view.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hut has a single bunk room and a basic kitchen, but it remains unserviced meaning you will have to carry your cooking equipment. Once you reach the saddle the hike flattens out until you reach the hut. Sounds easy, but it&#8217;s not!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The views from the hut are great, but a quick climb up Mount Olivier, just behind the hut, offers even better vistas. One of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/photography-spots-north-island-new-zealand\/\">the most popular photography spots on the North Island<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;is the Pouakai Tarns, on the Pouakai Crossing next to the Pouakai Hut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pouakai means the \u201csource of food\u201d in Maori. And working out which hut you are going to stay at on your New Zealand North Island road trip is certainly food for thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hut is&nbsp;<strong>two hours away from the Mangorei trailhead.<\/strong>&nbsp;The route climbs gradually through intertwining forest branches comparable to the Fangorn Forest featured in the Lord Of The Rings movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Pouakai Tarns are 15 minutes away from the hut.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bunks: 16<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Price: $15NZD per person<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bookings: First come, first served<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length: 5km one-way<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Duration: 1.5 hours one-way<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Elevation Gain: 600m<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12046820299\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Luxmore_Hut\"><\/span>5. It is possible to do it as a one-way in, one-way out hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get to the hut it\u2019s a flat walk around Lake Te Anau to Brod Bay but there is a way to shorten it. You can get a shuttle boat to Brod Bay from the ferry terminal in Te Anau and start there, cutting the distance in half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From&nbsp;there it\u2019s a steady&nbsp;<strong>uphill hike through the forest and sometimes underneath large cliffs.<\/strong>&nbsp;Once you are out of the trees, the hut isn\u2019t far away over a few undulating meadows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hut has everything you need for an enjoyable stay. Flushing toilets, hot water, a kitchen with gas, and views over Lake Te Anau. Liverpool Hut<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Liverpool-Hut.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13670\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Liverpool-Hut.jpeg 940w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Liverpool-Hut-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Liverpool-Hut-768x512.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Located in the West Matukituki Valley, Liverpool Hut sits high above the valley floor and stares prominently south, back toward the low-lying Aspiring Hut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The route to get here is mostly flat along the valley floor then culminates in a severely angled&nbsp;scramble&nbsp;<strong>involving<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;several sections of clambering around large tree roots.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The hut itself is quite basic<\/strong>, with just 2 communal beds that hold 5 people each, a table, a food preparation area, and a magically placed outhouse.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/best-hikes-wanaka\/\">A premier hike in Wanaka<\/a>&nbsp;for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other side of the valley, if you squint your eyes, you can&nbsp;spot the French Ridge Hut too! Another scenic hut in the area and worth your time if you have an extra day. It is only a few kilometers away from the Emerald Lakes and the Blue Lake &#8211;<\/strong>&nbsp;the highlights of the Tongariro Crossing &#8211; one of&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/day-hikes-north-island-new-zealand\/\">the most scenic day hikes on the North Island<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hut has everything you need to ensure a comfortable stay including hobs, gas, mattresses, and heating.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bunks: 26<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Price: $36NZD per person<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bookings: Mandatory between Oct 19th and April 30th<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length: 13.5km one-way from the Mangatepopo Car Park<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Duration: 4-6 hours one-way<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Elevation Gain: 700m ascent then a 500m descent<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12046831499\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_MacKinnon_Shelter\"><\/span>8. Inside you\u2019ll find gas hobs with gas provided, access to water, and a bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside you\u2019ll find&nbsp;<strong>the most sought-after wilderness in New Zealand.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The MacKinnon Shelter lies close to the highest point of the Milford Track,<\/strong>&nbsp;a track that has become synonymous with competitive reservations and high prices. You kind of pay what you get for though, providing the weather plays along, just like it did for me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is currently the 3rd MacKinnon Shelter to be built as the others kept getting blown away! Half of it is also privately owned and operated by a tour company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bunks: 0<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Price: Free as part of the Milford Track Experience<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bookings: Mandatory for the Milford Track between Oct 23rd and April 30th<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length: 26km one-way from the Glade Wharf<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Duration: 4 day minimum on the Milford Track<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Elevation Gain: 900m<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12046832999\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Sunrise_Hut\"><\/span>9. Routeburn Falls Hut<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Routeburn-Track-3-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13680\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Routeburn-Track-3-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Routeburn-Track-3-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Routeburn-Track-3-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Routeburn-Track-3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Great Walk has seen a&nbsp;<strong>recent price increase for foreign hikers.<\/strong>&nbsp;The Routeburn Falls hut is the second hut along the popular&nbsp;<strong>multiday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/routeburn-track-information\/\">Routeburn Trail<\/a>,<\/strong>&nbsp;starting&nbsp;at the northern part of the trail in Mount Aspiring National Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&nbsp;boasts flushing toilets, a huge kitchen with hot water and solar lighting, hobs, gas, and \u2018comfy\u2019 mattresses, and the best warden I have ever met in any of the huts!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its location is on&nbsp;<strong>the edge of the tree line situated between the thick forest and a wide glacially carved alpine valley<\/strong>, the best of both worlds. As its name suggests it\u2019s situated&nbsp;<strong>right next to Routeburn Falls.<\/strong>&nbsp;It\u2019s also the closest hut to the Harris Saddle and Conical Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bunks: 48<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Price: $130NZD per person for foreigners, $65NZD per person for NZ residents<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bookings: Mandatory between Oct 23rd and April 30th<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length: 8.8km one-way from the Routeburn Shelter trailhead<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Duration: 2.5-4 hours one-way<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Elevation Gain: 500m<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12046858599\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11_Mount_Fyffe_Hut\"><\/span>11. The hut, and the nearby summit of Mount Fyffe,&nbsp;<strong>offer splendid views east to the Pacific Ocean and west to the snow-capped Seaward Kaikoura Ranges.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s a small quaint hut that epitomizes the majority of back-country huts all over New Zealand.<\/strong>&nbsp;Basic but beautiful. It only has a small bunk room but does have a log burner for those cold mountain nights. The bunk room even has mattresses! Luxury or what? Some huts require reservations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>whilst others&nbsp;operate on a first come first serve basis. Don&#8217;t show up without a reservation as you may have to turn around or pay an elevated fee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Purchase a hut pass<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If the hut is first come first serve, it doesn&#8217;t mean it is free. You will have to&nbsp;<strong>pre-purchase&nbsp;a hut pass<\/strong>&nbsp;(at any DOC visitor center) and carry the ticket with you to the hut.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Disparity in hut amenities<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Backcountry huts can&nbsp;<strong>differ a lot&nbsp;in amenities<\/strong>. Make sure you inform yourself what is available and what&#8217;s not (for example gas stoves, heating, wood etc). This will influence what you have to bring along and what you can leave behind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The code of conduct<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don&#8217;t leave your trash behind.<\/strong>&nbsp;This is particularly important. I have seen people do it on more than one occasion. I can never understand it.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Clean up after yourself.<\/strong>&nbsp;Every hut has basic cleaning utensils provided such as broomstick. Leave the hut as you found it (and if you found it dirty then be a better person and clean it up). It won&#8217;t hurt your pride, it will make you feel better!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Come prepared<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>with the right equipment and adequate&nbsp;to weather conditions<\/strong>. Tell someone about your intentions and when you plan on coming back.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have fun and make new friends, but also be respectful of other people and share the space.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see the huts in New Zealand vary greatly in terms of amenities and price. If you aren\u2019t lucky enough to, or can\u2019t afford to secure spots on <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/are-new-zealand-great-walks-that-great\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"691\">the Great Walks<\/a> then there are plenty of alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There are annual backcountry hut passes, but they don\u2019t include many of the huts mentioned above and are not worth looking into if you\u2019re only a temporary visitor.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All huts that can be booked ahead of time should be, to avoid disappointment.
