Some of my favourites are\u00a0short one-hour strolls, while others can take up to four days to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I always tell others who ask for my advice that the more effort you are willing to invest, the more rewarded you will be with the views. If you plan\u00a0a\u00a0road trip around the Rockies, consider\u00a0venturing off the beaten path a little and into the marvellous Canadian backcountry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Guided_Hiking_Tours_in_Jasper\"><\/span>Guided Hiking Tours in Jasper<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have a lot of hiking experience and would feel more comfortable with a guide, or simply if you would like to get more out of your hikes, by learning about the geology and history of Jasper National Park then consider joining a guided hiking tour. As the views become more expansive they eventually climax on a ridge-line summit&nbsp;with a 360-degree stunning Panorama.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s most appealing about this hike, to me anyway, is that once you get down from the trail you can take a long soak in the hot springs located right near the trailhead! This is not only one of the best hikes but also one of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/best-photography-spots-jasper-national-park\/\">the best photography spots in Jasper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774464399\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_The_Bald_Hills\"><\/span>2. I recommend following the fire road all the way when going up and taking the narrower and steeper trail when going down.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you get to the first viewpoint of the lake, where the fire road finishes, &nbsp;continue up to the loop around the bald hills. From here follow the path counterclockwise to make it a bit easier on yourself. &nbsp;You will want to stop every 100 meters to take a photo as the views are breathtaking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774464799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_The_Skyline_Trail\"><\/span>3. This world-famous backpacking trip&nbsp;goes 44 km along the Maligne Range starting near&nbsp;Maligne Lake and finishing next to the Maligne Canyon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be done over 2, 3, or 4 days. The best views are between The Curator and Tekkara Campsites in the midsection of the trail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&nbsp;have published <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/skyline-trail-jasper\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"713\">a&nbsp;separate article dedicated to this hike<\/a>, diving deeper into the best possible ways to tackle it and general advice on hiking the skyline trail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774465199\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Tonquin_Valley\"><\/span>4. As much as that is true, the official trail length doesn&#8217;t take into consideration all of the possible day hikes you can do whilst you&#8217;re in the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tonquin Valley trail can be done anywhere between 2 and 7 days depending on how much exploring you wish on doing.&nbsp;I <a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/tonquin-valley-backpacking-guide\/\">spent 3 nights on&nbsp;this trail in July<\/a>&nbsp;and have&nbsp;fallen in love with the area.&nbsp;It&#8217;s a hike I won&#8217;t mind repeating again and again.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774465599\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Maligne_Canyon\"><\/span>5. Maligne Canyon hike only requires a mere hour of your time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best views are between bridges 1 and &nbsp;4. Bridges 5 and 6 are further downstream where the canyon is much wider and, in my eyes, much less impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a well-walked path that gets very busy during the day. My advice would be to try and complete the short walk before the first bus tour arrives at around 8:30 am<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774465999\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Indian_Ridge_via_Whistlers_Summit\"><\/span>6. How can it not be? It starts with a 1000m assist from the Jasper SkyTram, then ticks off Whistlers Summit before dropping into a col and then rising again to the ridgeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The views on the ridge are&nbsp;remarkable. On a clear day, you can see the glistening snow-capped peak of Mount Robson &#8211; the tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies, The Maligne Range, The Collin Range, The Victoria Cross Mountains, The Yellow-Head range, north and south along the Athabasca River and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/icefields-parkway-travel-guide\/\">Icefields Parkway<\/a>, plus many close peaks on the Trident Range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you only choose one hike, choose this one. Roughly, at the halfway point is where you&#8217;ll go past the famous Spirit Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your visit to Canada&nbsp;focuses on capturing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/best-photography-spots-canadian-rockies\/\">most photogenic spots in the Canadian Rockies<\/a>&nbsp;then Maligne Lake should be high on your list of priorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully the cruise operators aren&#8217;t licensed to run their tours&nbsp;during sunsets and sunrises, so if you plan on paddling to Spirit Island chances are you&#8217;ll have the place all to yourself.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774466799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_The_Valley_of_Five_Lakes\"><\/span>8. Each lake has a different depth offering various shades of blue and green depending on the light and the time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Admittedly it&#8217;s not the most exciting hike on this list but if you&#8217;re not feeling too energetic or fancy a relaxing afternoon stroll, this is what you should go for. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the locations where you can find the famous Muskoka red chairs that are spread around in some of the most scenic locations in Jasper National Park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774467199\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Wilcox_Pass\"><\/span>9. It&#8217;s a perfect place for spotting bighorn sheep too!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774467599\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"10_Edith_Cavell_Meadows\"><\/span>10. Back in 2012 half of the Ghost Glacier, one of the glaciers on Edith Cavell Mountain collapsed into the pond below. The impact has caused a flood of the nearby parking lot and day-use visitor area. Ever since then the visitor number to the area has been restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last&nbsp;year only&nbsp;180 vehicles per day could&nbsp;drive to the base of the mountain.&nbsp;<strong>Special permits&nbsp;were required.<\/strong>&nbsp;The permits for one particular time slot (8:30 am, 11 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm) can be acquired in Jasper&#8217;s visitor center, &nbsp;starting at 8 am each morning and up to two days ahead of your planned visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of its spectacular beauty and very limited permit number, visitors to the park&nbsp;start to line up as early as 7 am! &nbsp;It&#8217;s well worth it though. You get so close to the base of Mount Edith Cavell that it feels like you can just reach out and touch it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cavell Meadows Trail offers many different views of the surrounding mountains but chances are you won&#8217;t be able to look away from the Edith Cavell and its&nbsp;glaciers, a mountain that commands your gaze.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774468399\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"11_Sunwapta_Falls\"><\/span>11. The Upper Sunwapta Falls is accessed about 1 minute away from the car park. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lower falls is a short downhill walk&nbsp;that takes you 15 minutes away from the crowds. A very pleasant stroll that, for not much effort, gives you a little extra that not many other people bother to do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-11774468799\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"12_Verdant_Pass\"><\/span>12. The recent wildfires have prevented me from hiking Verdant Pass on more than one occasion, but I am planning to return to Jasper at some point to finally complete it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, I have decided to include it, mainly because I have heard great things about this hike and would like to spread the word!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to long-distance, Verdant Pass is not a common hike among tourists, but the compensation for walking almost 20 kilometers in one day will be great.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting at the same trailhead as the Tonquin Valley (Astoria), the long, but quite flat trail offers very unique views of the backside of Mount Edith Cavell.&nbsp;If you are looking for solitude consider this hike. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-12767009599\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Where_to_stay_in_Jasper\"><\/span>Where to stay in Jasper<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you plan to spend some time hiking in Jasper, I highly recommend booking accommodation in one of the places I have listed below!
