However, if you are fit but short on time, spending one night on the trail is feasible, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trail follows the same path there and back. While hiking it, I met some trail runners completing it in a day. Considering its popularity, the reservations are pretty hard to secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I trekked the Berg Lake trail in the second half of September and loved my experience. The autumn colours were in full swing, and the light was perfect for photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you hike in September, though, pack accordingly, with a sleeping bag with at least a -10 degrees comfort zone. July and August are the busiest, with plenty of day hikers and trail runners along the trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#cf2d2d26\"><strong>Important: <\/strong>Due to trail damage caused by flooding, Berg Lake Trail has been closed since 2021. In 2023, the first section of Kinney Lake reopened; in 2024, the second section of Whiterhorn campsite was opened. The upper part of the Berg Lake Trail is scheduled to open in 2025. I just showed up at the visitor centre near the trailhead and paid for my camping permit on the spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, unless you are fortunate and a cancellation pops up in the system, showing up without a reservation would be unheard of today. The opening hours are as follows: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>June 15 \u2013 Sept 29: 8 am to 4 pm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The last check-in of the day begins at 3:30 pm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Upon registering, other hikers and I\u00a0had\u00a0to watch an old-school video about proper trail conduct. The video explained the park and how to be a responsible hiker.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take only photographs, leave only footprints, and don&#8217;t leave any trash behind!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s worth mentioning that check-in at the visitor centre is mandatory, and you are better off following the rules. You are heading into the backcountry. You don&#8217;t want to end up like the guy from the &#8220;127 Hours&#8221; movie, do you?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"check-the-important-trail-notices\">Check the vital trail notices<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Berg Lake trail is subject to flooding, avalanches and wildlife encounters, all beyond human control. Make sure to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/bcparks.ca\/explore\/parkpgs\/mt_robson\/#hours\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bcparks.ca\/explore\/parkpgs\/mt_robson\/#hours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">main page for Mount Robson Provincial Park <\/a>and read any notices that could interfere with your trekking plans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"parking-at-the-trailhead\">Parking at the trailhead<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The hike starts a few hundred metres from the Mount Robson car park visitor centre. Hiking between massive peaks on either side is spectacular, and you\u2019re probably thinking, \u201cWow, this is so easy; I should do more hikes like this\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be fooled; the tricky part comes up pretty quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After passing the second campsite at Whitehorn, you head up the mountain and into the Valley of a Thousand Falls. To put things in perspective, you have gained 350 meters in elevation across 11 kilometres. Easy peasy, eh? You\u2019re now about to gain over 500 m elevation in 5km. This sounds achievable to day hikers, but remember you\u2019ll wear a big backpack.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to take it easy or plan on leaving the trailhead later in the day, you can hike to Whitehorn campsite on the first day, stay the night and tackle the more challenging part early the next day when rested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are relatively fit and plan on leaving early, you shouldn&#8217;t have any trouble continuing onward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a challenging&nbsp;5k uphill battle, rest well at the Emperor Falls Campground. Congratulate yourself as you&#8217;ve done the hard part. After another 3 km, you will find yourself at the shore of Berg Lake and will get the first glimpse of the beautiful reflection of the northeast-facing side of Mount Robson and its glaciers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stay&nbsp;the first night at the Marmot campground and find a spot on the lakeshore to capture the last light illuminating the top of Mount Robson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div day, pack your backpack and head to the Berg Lake campsite, your base for exploring the area. &nbsp;It&#8217;s only a further 2 km stroll through the forest along the west side of Berg Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I highly recommend staying two nights at the Berg Lake Campsite to get a good taste of what the park has to offer and to explore beyond the quickly retreating Robson Glacier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favourite side trip from here is the Toboggan Falls Route, which leads steeply up the falls and then swings right onto the Mumm Basin Route. From here, you\u2019ll have spectacular views of, well, pretty much everything. Just look at the photos above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hargreaves-lake-route-1-2-day\">Hargreaves Lake Route (1\/2 day) <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><\/meta><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><\/meta>From the Marmot campsite near Berg Lake, this route climbs to Hargreaves Lake and Glacier. From this viewpoint, the trail continues and crosses the Toboggan Falls Route on the course to the Mumm Basin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"toboggan-falls-2-hours-return\">Toboggan Falls (2 hours return) <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">From the trailhead at the Toboggan Creek bridge near Berg Lake campsite, the trail climbs to Toboggan Falls and the surrounding alpine basin. This route intersects the Hargreaves Lake and Mumm Basin routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"mumm-basin-route-1-2-day\"><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><strong>Mumm Basin Route&nbsp;(1\/2 day)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\">A steep alpine trail leads to views of the alpine lakes, mountains, and glaciers. The trail can start or end at Robson Pass or Berg Lake campsites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"snowbird-pass-route-1-day\"><strong>Snowbird Pass Route&nbsp;(1 day)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Snowbird Pass is closed in May and June\u00a0due to caribou calving. A challenging route marked by rock cairns (caution required), it provides spectacular views of the back of Mount Robson. From the Berg Lake campsite, the trip is 22 km, return. Start north of the Rearguard campsite, follow the Robson River, and then travel to the Robson Glacier\u2019s moraine.
