When it comes down to landscapes I have never seen&nbsp;so much diversity in such a small country.&nbsp;<\/strong>It&#8217;s a perfect spot for photography lovers! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After living in Queenstown, I finally decided to leave what the locals call the Queenstown bubble and go on a&nbsp;road trip around the south island. A road trip that took me right back to Queenstown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 6 weeks, I was on the road I wanted to capture the most dramatic landscapes of the south island of New Zealand. The view from the beach towards the rocks looks west.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a bit of luck, you might&nbsp;<strong>spot some seal pups hanging&nbsp;around<\/strong>&nbsp;the place too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get there it&#8217;s a 1km walk from the car park which meanders through rolling hills before eventually emerging out on the beach where the&nbsp;vista of the Archway Islands is right in your face.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-10575906199\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"8_Hooker_Glacier_Lake\"><\/span>8. The carving of the&nbsp;<strong>Hooker Glacier creates icebergs<\/strong>&nbsp;that float toward the south end of the lake, they&nbsp;make for very interesting foreground subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a&nbsp;<strong>10km return hike<\/strong>&nbsp;to this lake which crosses 3 scenic suspension bridges. It&#8217;s a great&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/best-day-hikes-new-zealand-south-island\/\">hike on the South Island.<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;Sunset is the best time to get golden, orange and sometimes vibrant pink light on the southwestern face of Mount Cook.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-10575906399\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Roys_Peak\"><\/span>9. To get there it&#8217;s a&nbsp;<strong>2-3 hour steady uphill hike.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The photograph above however is taken from a slightly different spot called the Coromandel peak. The viewpoint overlooks Pig Island, Pigeon Island, Lake Wakatipu and the winding Queenstown-Glenorchy road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The roadside pull-out, which has space for around 5 cars, is roughly\u00a0a 30-minute drive away from Queenstown.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Access to this viewpoint is very dangerous whilst driving back from Glenorchy as it&#8217;s on the opposite side of the road. Make sure you visit it&nbsp;on the way to Glenorchy.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-10592904399\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"14_Nugget_Point\"><\/span>14. At a certain time of the year, the core of the Milky Way rises directly behind the lighthouse. From the car park, it&#8217;s a 25-minute<strong> walk<\/strong>&nbsp;away.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-10575908699\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"15_Devils_Punchbowl_Waterfall\"><\/span>15. It&#8217;s a&nbsp;<strong>25-minute drive away from Franz Josef Village.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-10575910499\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"17_Franz_Josef_Glacier_Valley\"><\/span>17. The river that&nbsp;was formed by the glacier over thousands of years offers a great photographic opportunity both up and downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Another viewpoint is from the Alex Knob hike.<\/strong>&nbsp;The elevation gain on this hike makes for better photos&nbsp;and the extra effort is obviously worth it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:70px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cc-m-header-10575912499\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"18_That_Wanaka_Tree\"><\/span>18. Both&nbsp;are great at sunrise and sunset, I think sunrise has a slight edge as the mountains in the background showcase the soft first light.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>best time of the year however is Autumn<\/strong>&nbsp;when the leaves turn golden. This happens usually around mid to late April. This is widely regarded as the best time to&nbsp;visit&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inafarawayland.com\/wanaka-best-photography-spots\/\">the photography spots around Wanaka<\/a><\/strong>.
