Sass De Putia (in German: Peitlerkofel) is an impressive solitary mountain in the Puez Odle Nature Park in the Italian Dolomites. An excellent circuit trail around it offers beautiful panoramic views. I recommend that you add it to your Dolomiti hiking list.
Total roundtrip distance
13.6 kilometres / 8.5 miles
Elevation gain

Time required
4-5 hours

Overview of the hike
Peitlerkofel stands between two valleys: Val Badia to the East and Val Di Funes to the West. Thanks to an excellent trail network, a well-boot-beaten path circles the Peitlerkofel. With only 660 meters (2165 feet) across 13.6 kilometres (8.45 miles), the hike is neither long nor strenuous. Compared to other day hikes I have done in the Dolomites, I consider it to be of moderate difficulty.
The Sass De Putia circuit crosses two mountain saddles: Forcella Del Putia and Passo Goma. It can be walked in either direction, but I recommend counterclockwise for better views.
TIP: If you also want to summit Peitlerkofel, combine this hike with Via Ferrata Sass De Putia.

Getting there
The road to the Delle Erbe mountain pass is narrow and windy. It would help if you were comfortable driving on these kinds of roads. Otherwise, take advantage of public transport.
By bus
During the hiking season, buses run regularly to Passo Delle Erbe. Check the Sued Tirol Mobil info website for schedules. The bus stop is called Passo Delle Erbe (Würzjoch).
By car
A big paid parking lot is right on the pass opposite Ütia Di Börz. It can fill up quickly in the high season (July-August). It takes 35 minutes to reach the pass from Santa Maddalena in Val Di Funes, 8 minutes from Antermoia, and 22 minutes from San Martino in Badia.
Overnight stay & dining possibilities
Along the Sass De Putia circuit, there are a few dining and overnight possibilities, so you won’t have to carry much with you.
The first two are on the Delle Erbe Pass, near the trailhead: Ütia Di Börz and Baita Cir (dining only). The second, Munt de Fornella, is ca. 30 minutes into the hike, where the trail splits. The fourth option is Ütia Vaciara, which is halfway into the circuit. The last one, Ütia Goma (dining only), is 4-4.5 hours into the trail when hiking counterclockwise. I marked all options on the map. If you click on the individual icons, a window will pop up with links to each hotel or restaurant.
Where to stay nearby
You can access the Sass De Putia Circuit hike from Val Badia or Val Di Funes. Both are great valleys to base yourself in for a few days and explore the nearby trails and via ferratas.
